34th Canadian Regional Conference,
Nova Scotia
Every year legislators from
Parliament and provincial and territorial legislatures meet to discuss matters
of common interest. This year the 34th CPA Regional Conference will take place in
Halifax, Nova Scotia from July 24 to July 28, 1995.
One of the topics on the agenda is
"The Future of the CPA and the Commonwealth". Among the speakers will
be Arthur Donahoe, Secretary-General, CPA and the former Speaker of the
Nova Scotia Legislative Assembly, and Bob Speller, MP, Chairman of the
Federal Branch of CPA.
Other topics include: "Sexual
Harassment", "Rules of Debate: Democracy or Dictatorship",
"Health Care" and "Government of the '90s: Privatization and
Public/Private Sector Partnerships.
The host of the conference will be Paul
MacEwan, Speaker of the Nova Scotia Legislative Assembly.
19th Canadian Regional Seminar
Legislators also meet in the autumn
for a seminar held under the auspices of the Canadian Region of CPA.
This year the seminar will take
place in Toronto. Neither the agenda or exact time has been established, but it
is usually held in late October or early November.
New Speaker in Manitoba
The Canadian Region of CPA welcomes
a new Speaker. Louise Dacquay was appointed Speaker of the Manitoba
Legislative Assembly on May 23, 1995. She had been the Deputy Speaker prior to
the election and replaces Denis Rocan who had been Speaker since 1988.
A certified Business Education
Teacher, Mrs.Dacquay was first elected to the Legislative Assembly in 1990 but
her political career started in municipal politics with the City of Winnipeg
from 1986 to 1989.
As MLA for Seine River she was a
Member of the Government Consultation Team on Alcohol, Drug and Substance
Abuse, the Legislative Management Committee, the Standing Committee on Rural
Development and Legislative Review Committee. She also chaired the following
committees: Municipal Affairs, Supply, Committee of the Whole and of Ways and
Means.
