New Lieutenant-Governor of Alberta

Prime Minister Brian Mulroney announced the appointment of Helen Hunley as Lieutenant-Governor of Alberta.

Born in Acme, northeast of Calgary she grew up in Rocky Mountain House and eventually became councillor and mayor of the town. After serving in the Canadian Women's Army Corps during the Second World War she went into business and eventually founded Helen Hunley Insurance.

She served as mayor from 1966 to 1971, was elected to the Legislative Assembly in 1971 and became Solicitor General in 1973. Re-elected in 1975 she became Minister of Social Services, a position she held until her retirement from the Assembly in 1978.

Since then she has held a number of community and political positions including membership on the Alberta 75th Anniversary Commission, Chairman of the Alberta Mental Health Advisory Council, and President of the provincial Conservative Party.

As lieutenant-governor she succeeds Frank Lynch-Staunton whose five year term has expired.
